What an ijazah actually is

Long before certificates and institutions, the Quran moved from person to person: a student recited to a teacher until the teacher was satisfied, and the teacher — who had once done the same — testified to it. The ijazah is that testimony, and the sanad is its record: your teacher, their teacher, and so on, an unbroken chain of named individuals.

When you hold an ijazah, you are not holding proof that you passed a course. You are holding a place in that chain, and the responsibility that comes with it — because the next name added after yours will be a student of yours.

How the program runs

Everything begins with the assessment phase. You recite selected passages — chosen to expose the full range of tajweed rules — and the teacher writes an honest preparation plan. For some students preparation takes three weeks; for others, three months. We would rather extend preparation than let errors travel into the recitation phase, where they cost far more time.

The recitation phase is the heart of the program: the entire Quran, juz by juz, recited to your teacher in scheduled sessions. Every session is error-logged. An occasional slip, corrected and re-read, is normal; a pattern of errors pauses progression and returns that passage to preparation. The standard is examiner-level, and it is applied evenly to everyone.

At completion, the ijazah is written and granted formally — many students choose to have family present, and we encourage it. It tends to be an emotional occasion, and it has earned the right to be.

The two tracks

• Ijazah in recitation (bil-nazar): you recite from the mushaf. This certifies rule-perfect recitation and is the track most tajweed graduates take.
• Ijazah in memorisation (bil-ghayb): you recite the entire Quran from memory. This presumes completed Hifz held at recall strength, and the assessment phase tests that presumption honestly before anything is promised.

A word about standards

We decline more ijazah applications than we accept, and we tell applicants why: usually the tajweed foundation needs another few months, occasionally the Hifz needs consolidation first. This is not gatekeeping for its own sake. An ijazah granted loosely devalues every ijazah in the same chain — including those of the teachers who trusted us with theirs. When we do grant one, the student can be certain it was earned.
